During the 18th and 19th century breweries and distilleries dominated this area as there was a good supply of water. The Fountain Brewery opened by the canal in 1856 and beer production continued here until 2004 ending 148 years of beer making. By the 1900s McEwan's trade extended as far as Australia and South Africa. In 1971 Scottish & Newcastle, as it had become, moved into the North British Rubber Company site.
