North British Rubber Works (c) Historic Environment Scotland
As well as the cargoes that were shipped along the canal, the canal provided a source of water for many industries. This actually kept the canal open long after the boats stopped. The North British Rubber Company made rubber products, from machinery belts to hot water bottles. During WWI the factory produced over a million pairs of boots for the British Army and in WWII they also supplied gas masks and barrage balloon material. It was one of the city's largest employers with 3000 workers.
