The canal's main purpose was to supply cheaper coal to Edinburgh from the coalfields to the west. Edinburgh's coal supply had previously come through the Port of Leith incurring heavy taxes. The canal opened up competition and drove prices down. Port Hamilton was named after the Duke of Hamilton who contributed to the canal and who also had collieries in Falkirk.
