The eastern end of the canal was once an industrial hub and covered a much larger area than today's Lochrin Basin. There were two large basins servicing cargoes of coal, lime, quarried stone and bricks from the coalfields, quarries and brickworks to the west. The original basins have now been built over but there are still traces of the original footprint - Lothian House on Lothian Road has a carving to commemorate the site of Port Hopetoun.
