The Meggetland stretch of the canal is the training ground for boat club rowing teams. St Andrews Rowing Club, the oldest amateur rowing club in Scotland, originally had a boathouse at Fountainbridge. Their first recorded race, along a mile and a half of the canal, was in 1848 against the Grange Cricket Club. Now they have Olympic medalist Kathleen Grainger in their ranks.
