In 1823, a year after the canal was completed, the Union Canal was extended to a new terminus in Falkirk, to reduce the distance for passengers walking between the Union Canal and Port Downie at Lock 16 on the Forth & Clyde Canal. From there they could continue their journey west into Glasgow. Carriages also ran up and down from here to the Union Inn, known locally as Auntie Katie's, at Lock 16.
