This photograph was taken around 1900 and shows Port Downie, the Union Canal basin on the left. This is where the Union Canal and Forth & Clyde (to the right) were joined, just west of Lock 16. It also shows former canal owned Union Inn, locally known as Auntie Katie's, at the centre.

Industrial buildings of Camelon's iron and chemical industries are just beyond the Union Inn, while to the right, passing westwards, is a canal lighter of the Leith, Hull & Hamburg Steam Packet Company.

This port was named after Robert Downie of Appin.
