Aerial view of Almond Aqueduct and canal feeder (c) Crown Copyright Historic Environment Scotland
The modest off shoot on the south side of the canal actually feeds the entire canal. Cobbinshaw Reservoir was built in the Pentland Hills to supply the canal. The feeder route is 3 miles long and uses several watercourses to reach the River Almond. It is then channelled along a lade before crossing a small aqueduct and running through four tunnels. Quite a feat of engineering!
WALK: Almondell & Calderwood Country Park is hidden in the Almond valley below the aqueduct. There are a number of walking routes and a Visitor Centre. The canal feeder can be seen along some of the paths.
