This is the smallest of the three aqueducts that were built for the canal. Hugh Baird's original plan was to build a bridge with a single arch here, but after consultation with his advisor Thomas Telford he changed the design to five arches, using the same design for all three aqueducts.

The sluice on the aqueduct is used to regulate the canal's level. When tourist boats first came out from Edinburgh it was opened to create a spectacular waterfall. In 1895 it froze creating a huge icicle from the canal to the river. It took two months to melt.
