Originally there were 62 stone bridges built over the canal between here and Falkirk. If you look carefully at the keystone in the centre of each stone bridge you will see that they are numbered. Bridge 1 also has carvings on both sides, to the east Edinburgh's Castle and to the west the oak tree representing Glasgow. Due to redevelopment along the canal there are now 88 bridges, with 25 bridges within Edinburgh alone.
