This massive shale bing, spoil heap, has become a scheduled monument to the industry that created it. Greendykes was one of twenty seven bings that once spread across West Lothian. It highlights the enormous amount of material that was processed to extract oil from shale. On average 10 barrels of oil left 7 tonnes of burnt shale waste. One estimate suggests Greendykes contains 15 million tonnes of waste.
