Opened in 1790 the Forth & Clyde Canal was designed by John Smeaton to allow seagoing vessels to transit coast to coast. The Forth & Clyde Canal links the Irish Sea with the North Sea running from Bowling on the Clyde Estuary at the west, to Grangemouth and the magnificent Kelpies on the Firth of Forth to the east, providing a unique and tranquil route through some of Scotland's most densely populated areas.
