Edinburgh Quay (c) Scottish Canals

The glass fronted highrise buildings of Edinburgh Quay have transformed this area. The canal basins and corridor had been derelict since trade along the canal stopped in the 1930s. Redevelopment around Lochrin Basin was part of the Millennium Link project to reopen the canal in 2001, returning the canal to a living and working waterway through to Falkirk.

The renewal of the canal also has to develop a relationship with the surrounding communities. The canal can be used as a catalyst for community regeneration too. Reunion Canal Boats, a social enterprise company, work with volunteers to develop their skills and realise their potential whilst maintaining and promoting the canal as an asset for the community. They work in both Edinburgh and Falkirk.
