Around 1870s Dougal's brickworks opened beside the canal at Winchburgh. The company used blue clay from a pit immediately east of the works. They made good use of the canal for transporting bricks to Edinburgh and had their own stables and horses. The works continued to operate until the 1970s. It was one of the last commercial operators to use the canal before it closed in 1965.
