This was once an industrial hub where tonnes of coal from the North Lanarkshire coalfields were transferred onto the canal. In 1840 the Slammanen Railway was also a faster route for passengers travelling by canal from city to city. It took a quarter of the time taken by canal into Glasgow as it avoided all the canal locks at Falkirk. However the service was not successful, closing before the Glasgow to Edinburgh railway line opened in 1842.
